RSE are excited to announce that our Lochmaddy WTW project won the Innovation Award at this year’s Scottish Civil Engineering Awards 2019, managed jointly by CECA Scotland and ICE Scotland.
The 2019 Scottish Civil Engineering Awards Ceremony, celebrating outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity in Scotland, was hosted in the Double Tree by Hilton North Queensferry on Thursday 19th September.
The project value engineering process included directing and engaging local subcontractors to optimise the site location. This initiative minimised the visible impact of the works and allowed for the reuse of excavated rock, blasted when clearing the site, for the construction of access roads, saving the project approximately £2m. Incorporating some of the traditional below ground structures such as the chlorine contactor into the modules enabled the provision of a simple foundation slab for construction.
Overall the identification and exploitation of numerous value engineering opportunities allowed RSE to deliver £10m capital savings, programme savings of around 40%, reduced operational costs, risk and environmental and community impact.
The modular aspect of the Lochmaddy Water Treatment Works provides future proofing of the facility, with the possibility to modify the capacity or even the location of the WTW, should it be required. Contributing to a culture of reuse and “no redundant” assets.
This is the second award for the project in 2019 after successfully winning DfMA Project of the Year at the Water Industry Awards 2019 earlier in the year.
