Emergency measures implemented to prevent water scarcity issues on Isle of Skye

The Issue

RSE was engaged by Scottish Water to implement emergency measures to prevent water scarcity levels from disrupting the water supply for communities on the Isle of Skye.

Due to the ongoing dry spell and increased demand across the water network, drought conditions were being experienced on Skye, requiring RSE teams to provide a blue light service to safeguard supplies. The burn feeding the local Broadford Water Treatment Works had recorded its lowest ever water levels as it was 2-3 days from running dry, requiring Scottish Water to put preventative measures in place.

The Solution

RSE’s Operational and Maintenance (O&M) team quickly installed additional pipes to increase supply and maintain the flow of water from a nearby loch into the burn. As the site is located close to a Site of Special Scientific Interest, extensive control and health and safety measures were required to transport the necessary water pipes and generators to site. More than 900 metres of 6-inch ridged pipe was air lifted by helicopter around 3km into the hillside area. Two 150kVA generators and three high-capacity dewatering pumps along with the associated control equipment were also installed within hours of being delivered to site.

The Result

The emergency action taken allowed a temporary measure to be put in place to secure the water supply for the local community, with limited environmental impact. RSE’s O&M team is continuing to support Scottish Water in delivering emergency drought plans throughout Scotland to manage heatwave weather conditions and prevent water scarcity from affecting public supply.
