RSE Developing Innovative Ceramic Membrane Modular Solution

  • 5 Aug 2021

RSE has been designing and constructing an innovative 4.5Ml/d Ceramic Membrane Modular solution for Bonnycraig Water Treatment Works (WTW), housed within Transportable Treatment Units (TTUs) and commissioned for Scottish Water.

The Bonnycraig Modular WTW is RSE’s largest TTU build to date – housed within a two-storey building consisting of 17 No. modular units – alongside being the first ceramic membrane plant to be built in Scotland and only the second in the UK. In collaboration with PWNT, the integration of technologies from RSE’s chemical dosing division and controls & automation subsidiaries, offers a fully off-site designed, fabricated and tested unit, subsequently reducing project cost and environmental impact, whilst improving project schedule.

The modular WTW is being fabricated at RSE’s Modular Facility of Excellence based in Muir of Ord, complete with PWNT equipment, including all associated equipment, while the access platforms were fabricated at RSE’s Dewsbury facility. The design of the new Bonnycraig WTW was developed over 18 months, through an integrated approach with Scottish Water, to assist with design governance and decision making.

RSE has driven a modular solution approach with Scottish Water, to achieve considerable carbon reductions. Carbon conscious choices includes opting for offsite manufacturing, saving approximately 18 months of works over traditional build methods, supported by an overall reduced project programme. The modular WTW roof will accommodate a solar array, which will be utilised as a contribution to the power supply of the plant, assisting in driving down power consumption from the grid.

Additionally, RSE will oversee the installation of a pioneering ventilation system, fitted with fabric diffusers which are manufactured from recycled plastic bottles. Carbon reductions will be further facilitated on site through the availability of electric vehicle chargers, helping to accommodate the transition to a fleet of electric vehicles by RSE and our clients.

Once the modular Bonnycraig WTW has been fully built and tested by the RSE team, it will be transferred to the Peebles site in early 2022. Once delivered it will take 15 weeks for the modular TTUs to be fully reassembled, with mechanical and electrical teams working simultaneously for the final site installation. Transporting the completed WTW direct to site will reduce the overall MEICA and civil construction impact on the local community and wider environment.

Allan Dallas, Managing Director for RSE, added:

RSE has worked collaboratively with PWNT over the past two years to design a modular WTW with integrated CeraMac filtration and ILCA technologies. Incorporating PWNT’s standard offering into RSE’s modular TTU system has facilitated a fully off-site fabricated and tested unit, devised for Scottish Water.

RSE’s Project Manager for the Bonnycraig WTW project, Daniel Sutherland, commented:

Bonnycraig has been a fantastic project to be involved with, from concept through to project delivery. It incorporates some of the latest water treatment concepts and technologies such as modular offsite construction, ceramic membranes and carbon offsetting technologies.

The design phase of the project was completed under COVID-19 lockdown, which highlighted the power of collaboration and communication between project stakeholders. Incorporating new technologies into our modular solutions during lockdown was certainly not easy, but the outcome has been highly satisfying. We have also integrated other standard solutions from our chemical dosing and control and automation subsidiaries into the final product in order to meet the clients specifications and requirements.

The project is now well through the procurement and off-site fabrication phase, with flushing and off-site sampling and commissioning planned for later this year. The TTU’s will begin their load-out to site in February 2022, with a planned Water into Supply date of December 2022.
